"She wouldn't let go of my hand that day"
Recently one of our clients had a fall at home and when Helen from Hook Home Help arrived, her neighbour had already called the ambulance. Helen sat with her to make sure she was comfortable and calm. She contacted her daughter to update her and reassure her too. Helen is calm and competent and supported everyone who was involved. She will always stay as long as is needed and as long as it takes for an ambulance to arrive.
When the ambulance crew arrived Helen was able to pass on our client's recent history of falls and the medication she was taking as well as family contact details. Once our lady was safely on her way to hospital, Helen set about cleaning blood from the carpet and making sure that everything was clean and safe for when the client got home a few days later.
Before she came back, Helen popped in with bread and milk and dinner so that there would be something there whenever she made it home from the hospital. Helen said afterwards, "She wouldn't let go of my hand that day".
It is easy to describe the practical things that we do, but it is probably the smallest things that make the biggest difference. For the lady involved, she needed someone there with her, holding her hand, calling her family, dealing with the questions and making sure that everyone stayed as calm as possible. Now she has returned to her house which is all clean and tidy and had some essentials waiting there for her. The same person has taken her to the doctors this week and is always on hand to support where she can.
Hook Home Help is supporting our clients, and their families, to keep everyone as happy and healthy as possible
