What is Companionship Care?
Companionship care is about having someone you can rely on for company and conversation and a bit of support when you need it.
If you are new to the area, far from family, recently bereaved, or have spent some time in hospital, it can be helpful to have someone to talk to, and to be with you when you need someone there.
Companion care can include almost anything that isn’t medical or personal care.
Who is Hook Home Help for?
Hook Home Help is for anyone in Hook who is looking for some company or some support. You may be new to the area or have had some time being unwell or in hospital.
I am visiting people in Hook, Hampshire. Visits can be regular or ad hoc. Visits are charged by the hour.
If you feel that you would benefit from some company and a pair of helping hands then get in touch and have a chat about what you need and how I can help.
You might need some practical help with organising medical appointments and getting to them, or some help doing your shopping and changing the bed or a bit of a hand with the garden, or you might just want some company and someone to chat to.
You might like a chat about the news or the old days, or places you have been or want to go to.
If you are feeling anxious about anything, I can help with tips and techniques to manage anxiety and to help you sleep.
You might like someone to come with you the first time you go to a new club or society or someone to help you find out about what is on and how you can get to meet other people.
Some tasks can seem overwhelming if you have to do them on your own. You might have an overgrown garden or a part of your house that needs sorting out. It can be helpful to have some moral support when starting big projects, both with the practical sides but also just to help to make them manageable.
Having some help with these things can make it easier to stay at home, can help to relieve anxiety and loneliness and make life a bit easier and a bit happier.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness for Older People
Having seen the effects of anxiety and depression both on clients, staff and my own personal experience, I then went on to start a business that offers Mindfulness training both in the workplace and for individuals. Mindfulness can be useful to help to decrease anxiety, depression and stress and will also improve sleep and general enjoyment of life. This is about making very small changes to make life a bit happier.
Research has shown that Mindfulness can be particularly helpful for older people.
It can help to deal with stress around ageing, worrying about family and friends, bereavement, and in dealing with health issues.
A qualitative study of older adults’ perspectives on initiating exercise and mindfulness practice indicated that mindfulness training and exercise can serve as tools to cultivate important healthy lifestyle qualities among older adults, who are in the midst of mental, social, emotional and physical change.
“Thanks to Penny's empathetic and supportive coaching I have found a new path through my grief and I have learnt practical ways to help with my anxiety. Mindfulness has allowed me to quieten the endless inner chatter in my head and exist in the moment. I would recommend Mindfulness for Beginners to anyone who wants to learn tools to cope with this hectic modern and pressurised world.”

Benefits of mindfulness
Studies have shown that Mindfulness can help to:
1. Slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s
A recent study showed that a combination of meditation and breathing exercises can help slow down the development of dementia-related diseases. Other studies suggest that mindfulness meditation helps people cope better with the anxiety, stress and depression that often accompany memory loss.
2. Improving focus
The most scientifically proven aspect of Mindfulness is that it will help to improve your focus
3. Managing moods and emotions
It is easy to be overwhelmed by emotion and stressed by change at any age but as we get older there are many areas of change that we need to adjust to. The passing of people and pets who we love, changes in where and how we live. Mindfulness can help us to accept these changes and to focus on what we have rather than what we have lost.
4. Improving memory
Some studies have shown that Mindfulness is useful in helping to maintain both long and short-term memory functions
5. Allowing ourselves to rest, to be calm and to be happy
Mindfulness can be useful in helping us to allow ourselves to rest and to stay calm as well as allowing ourselves to be happy. Self-care is a very important part of ageing healthily and living more happily.
Having spoken to older people, they have been grateful for this time out from worrying about themselves and the younger members of their families. They thanked me for having introduced them to these techniques to help to alleviate some of the stress that they were experiencing.
“Penny’s mindfulness course has been a brilliant way for me to improve my focus. Her flexibility, friendly manner and non-judgemental attitude make her a brilliant mentor and teacher”
