A lovely review from the daughter of one of our newer clients. When I wrote to say thank you, she replied

"Well deserved Penny. He specifically mentioned the other day that he has a high opinion of you and that you are very hard working."

We all met for the first time at the end of last year. This lovely gentleman is 90 years old and this was the first time that he accepted some help around the house. He was clearly reluctant initially and wary of someone new, but after the first session we were firm friends and he was telling me about his whole life, work and hobbies, only pausing occasionally to say things like, "Have you changed the sheets already?! I don't know how you did that so quickly! You must show me your strategy one day", and on we went to the next task.

I love to hear people's life stories. I realise that it's hard to accept help and frustrating to not be able to do the things we used to be able to do. I try to make the transition as easy as possible. Sometimes it helps to ask people about their jobs and I love to see them light up at the chance to tell me about their adventures and achievements. To be able to focus on their past identity rather than their current struggles.

He went to find old photos to show me and newspaper clippings. I love old photos and I love hearing about people's long lives and times passed. It is fascinating to know what remains important to people at ninety years old and what has faded away.
